Southmoreland Recipe for Chocolate Pie

Every year since the movie “The Help” was released I have made Minnie’s Chocolate Pie.   I loved the sassy attitude of Minnie’s character and the notion that when things go bad pie makes it better.  It also reminds me each year of my good friend Peter Sharp, a fellow Select Registry Innkeeper, and owner of the Fairview Inn in Jackson, Mississippi.  The Inn’s restaurant played a major role in supplying the production with a multitude of chocolate pies for filming.

This year I changed the recipe up just a bit and used two different chocolates from Savory Spice in Kansas City.  I am particularly interested to see how the “Black Onyx Cocoa” might impact the taste.  It already added a darkness that is much richer and a bit more purple that dutch cocoa powder.  I will let you know how it tastes.  Here is the recipe if you are interested in making this delicious pie yourself.

INGREDIENTS:

1 Pie 9 Inch Pie Crust

1 1/2 C Sugar

1 Tbs Black Onyx Cocoa Powder

2 Tbs Natural Cocoa Powder

4 Tbs Butter, melted

2 Large Eggs, beaten

5 oz evaporated milk

1 tsp Vanilla

1/4 tsp salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees.  Place pie crust in a 9 inch pie plate and decorate edges to your liking.  Set aside.  Combine the remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl until smooth.  Pour the batter into the prepared pastry and bake for 50 – 60 minutes until set.  Serve with whip cream.
